Top 3 Big Bear Mountain Bike Trails
Big Bear Lake offers over 150 miles of trails to explore by mountain bike. Here are three of the most popular trails, according to locals and visitors:
Skyline Trail
The Skyline Trail is a fabulous singletrack trail that journeys across the mountains above Big Bear Lake and Snow Summit Ski Resort. commencing at Dogwood Dr.’s termination where it switches to dirt, the trip starts with an incline up the mountainside, continuing this pattern for 1.8 miles, frequently integrating switchbacks.
The trail will take you on a series of short climbs and switchbacks before arriving at the top of Snow Summit. You’ll then roll up and down alongside the side of the mountain for 10.2 miles before reaching a big descent that ends with a slight uphill just before the end of the trail. The trail ends as it reaches Metcalf Creek, from which point you can follow service roads back to Big Bear Lake.
Grout Bay Trail
The Grout Bay Trail is one of the most popular mountain biking trails in Big Bear. It’s a great option for those looking for a relatively easy ride with stunning lake views.
You’ll want to remember Grout Bay trail long after you experience it. The singletrack is a smooth and fast mile-long ride that is perfect for any level of rider. You can access the trail from Highway 18 on the North Shore, or from the Hanna Flats loop. The terrain is mostly hard-packed with a few soft areas in the corners, making it a great trail for anyone looking for an enjoyable ride.
Cougar Crest Trail
The Cougar Crest Trail is a must-do for any mountain biker visiting Big Bear. This trail is considered one of the best singletrack trails in Southern California, and it’s easy to see why. The trail is packed with stunning views, technical sections, and fast descents.
Cougar Crest trail is especially appealing to experienced, skilled riders because of its difficult terrain and technical nature. The bottom third is a fast descent that’s relatively smooth, but the top two-thirds is where the challenges begin.
The number of cars in the parking lot will tell you how many people are currently on the trail. However, it’s important to keep in mind that weekends usually have more hikers since this is a popular hiking trail for both locals and tourists. The biking path ends when it reaches the PCT junction where bikes aren’t allowed.
Snow Summit Bike Park
Snow Summit Bike Park is a top destination for mountain biking, offering something for everyone from beginners to experienced riders. Downhill treks, modest gravity-fed trails, and challenging jumps await skilled bikers, while the base area is perfect for families with kids or beginner riders who want to learn the basics of mountain biking.
